Malibu was the last shoot of my California trip, and honestly, I couldn't have asked for a better way to end it. I had the pleasure of photographing Phil and Neve at El Matador Beach, and right from the beginning, they were such a fun couple to work with. Phil is a lawyer, while Neve is a professional ballet dancer, so they come from two very different worlds. Phil mentioned that he'd never done a professional photoshoot before, so I wanted to make sure he felt comfortable rather than throwing him straight into unfamiliar poses. We started with something comfortable, make small adjustments, and slowly introduce more unconventional poses as the couple gains confidence and trust in my direction. Before long, Phil was posing like he'd been doing this for years, even surprising himself when I showed him some of the photos. What made this session especially rewarding was hearing how comfortable they felt throughout the process, how much they appreciated the clear direction, and how there were never any awkward moments of standing around wondering what to do next. I also loved being able to incorporate the landscape into the compositions, letting the environment become part of the story rather than just a pretty backdrop. By the end of the shoot, I felt like we'd created something that was both natural and editorial, without sacrificing their personalities. And after three days of shooting across California, ending the trip with a couple who trusted my creative process made the experience that much more memorable.
